English in England

England is still the most preferred destination to learn English. Due to its long tradition and experience England has many schools and teachers on a high level. The teachers receive special education through the Universities in order to teach English to students with a foreign language.
Most teaching books are being produced in England and are being used in English classes all over the world. The most popular exams have been originated in England: Cambridge and Oxford Exam, Arels and many more. Due to a heavy demand, these exams and their corresponding preparation courses are also being offered at schools in Canada, USA, Australia and New Zealand.

The country

England

England is a most beautiful country, which fascinates so many visitors, be it for its scenery or the interesting culture. For many admirers of art and culture it is a living museum. Monumental castles, impressive cathedrals and churches, medieval streets and alleys, charming villages with thatched cottages and houses will impress every one.

Currency

The currency is the british pound (GB£), which is based on the decimal system. Hundred pence equal one pound sterling. There are banknotes of 5, 10, 20 and 50 £ and coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 p (pence) and 1 £.

Means of payment

EC–cards (can be used at every bancomat), credit cards, traveller cheques and some cash is recommended. If you are planning a longer stay, we advise to open an account with a local bank.The schools can give you more information about it.

Traffic rules and regulations

The british traffic signs are more or less the same as the international ones. In Great Britain driving is on the left and passing on the right side. The right of way is marked with white lines on the street and being indicated with signs. They do not have the same rules for the right of way as we do! Belts are obligatory. The Swiss driver’s license, as well as the international one is accepted. They are valid for one year starting with the day of entry to the country.

Current

The current is 240V, 50Hz in the whole country. For your appliances you need an adapter (can be bought at any household or department store).

Travel documents

A valid national passport or ID is required. As a citizen of any EU country, Switzerland, Southafrican Republic, USA or a commonwealth country (Australia, Canada, New Zealand) no visa is required. The customs may want to see a confirmation of your course. So please present it upon request when entering the country.

Weather

In England the weather is very instable. The climate is mild and moderate, with rarely extreme temperatures. Showers are possible at any time all year round. However during summer it can be also very hot. The driest months are from March to June. The most rain falls between September and January.
