Cambridge is a famous University city, dominated by the 32 Colleges that make up the University of Cambridge. Situated on the river Cam, with many green areas and beautiful gardens, Cambridge is one of the prettiest cities in England and one of the most popular Language school destinations. The academic tradition of the city is visible in the magnificent Colleges that are built very close together in the inner city. Many of these buildings, consisting of an inner court, a garden, and a chapel, can be viewed by the public, and various activites on campus such as concerts, are also open to the public.
As a matter of fact, you could say that the city is designed for Language students. Cambridge is one hour away from London by train (80 km). During the last few years, Cambridge has developed into being one of the most important research centers for modern technology in England. With 110'000 inhabitants, the city has a lot to offer visitors. Thousands of students influence this rather conservative city, in a very young and dynamic way. The beautiful city center with one of the biggest selections of shops and elegant galleries, is always very popluar and the atmosphere of the students can be felt in every area of the city. The fascinating architecture, also contributes to the very unique atmosphere, giving you the opportunity to see building styles used over the past 1'000 years. You will also be amazed at the number of bicycles you will see in Cambridge. Most language students, as well as many of the native people, own or rent a bike.
As far as sport goes, you will find a modern Sport hall, one indoor and three outdoor swimming pools, many public tennis courts, two golf courses, and horse riding schools. In summer, Punting – steering a small boat with a long rod, is one of the most popular leisure time activities for the students. The city has many museums and galeries, two theaters, many cinemas, restaurants and traditional Pubs, as well as many Discos for those who love the night life. If you want to get out of the city for a change, there are many sights worth seeing close by. For instance, Fen-County – a flat, swampy area, is great to discover by bike. With its dreamy villages, lovely canals and rivers, it was drained for the purpose of farming many hundreds of years ago.
Due to the large number of students that attend Cambridge, and the limited amount of accomodation available, we recommend that you book early enough.
The cost of living is a little higher than on the south coast, similiar to that of London.
