The colonial city of Oaxaca is situated 550 kilometers south of Mexico city at a height of 1'550 meters above sea level in a valley. The population is approx. 260'000, and Oaxaca is the capital city of the state of the same name. The city enjoys very comfortable weather throughout the year, and has managed to maintain the atmosphere of colonial times, in addition to influences from the Indian culture. The many restaurants and cafés, and the Zócalo (the center of the city) make Oaxaca into a very lively city and the perfect place to get to know Mexico and its people.
Not far from here is Mitla and Monte Albán, both well known for their beautiful Zapotec temples.
Oaxaca is still very traditional with many markets, churches and festivals.

November: In Puerto Escondido, on the Pacific coast, is an international Surfing competition with competitors from around the world.
18. December: The "Fiesta de la Soledad" for the saints that protect the city, lasts a whole week.
